There is more than one data center. So, in the event of a catastrophic failure at one data center, LEAP servers will begin operating at a second data center. The data centers are located on different power grids with different energy suppliers.
No. The benefit of cloud technology is that the stress and worry about backups is completely removed from the firm. The data the firm stores with LEAP is backed up in multiple locations, so the firm doesn’t have to worry about keeping their own copy.
The data stored with LEAP is owned by the firm, and LEAP will not hand the data over to any third party without the firm’s consent.
The benefit of storing the data on AWS servers is that the firm has an industrial-strength server grid, so they do not experience the same downtime or lockouts with a private server (including cloud private servers). With AWS, even when one server goes down there is another that will kick in and continue to run. We have had this happen and our clients don't even notice. Even if all the servers went down with a natural disaster, you could still work offline. The firm can see LEAP’s historical uptime here: http://stats.pingdom.com/rn0jgkti8xx7/1824843
The truth is that the data stored with AWS and LEAP is infinitely more secure than what a firm can ever achieve on their own server sitting in their office. LEAP invests $20M per year on security with AWS, which is far more than any small or mid-sized law firm can afford. The staff at the firm need to have secure passwords and not share them with anyone else. "Hackers" are now focusing on onsite servers as they are easier to hack than AWS. Ransomware attacks are only experienced by firms with local servers. Not all "clouds" are created equal; AWS is the industry leader of cloud hosting; there is no one more secure. The security with LEAP and AWS includes encryption, 2 Factor Authentication, N+1 Redundancy, secure backups, etc.
As LEAP performs regular backups, there is no need for LEAP firms to perform their own backups. This would be a complete waste of time and money!
